Slowing Summer: Sidewalk Chalk

My children think of so many things to do with sidewalk chalk! A $1 box of chalk from the dollar store provides hours of entertainment and creativity. They have of course drawn pictures but also, ground up the chalk and made it into paint, grated it over their nature goodies for "salad" toppings, made handprints and even make up for their girls they draw. I love these simple homey creative play times!

Slowing Summer: Breakfast Outside

Its become a tradition to do a scavenger hunt breakfast when we come to Colorado in the summer! I remember doing this as a Girl Scout years ago - my Mom hid bags of cereal, juice boxes, bags of grapes and fun little bags of powdered sugar donuts!

A couple of weeks later, we decided to fix and serve breakfast outside one Saturday morning - so lovely! Grammie's Chuck Wagon was a great success! I love the simplicity of a thrifted sheet table cloth, a few daisies and sprigs of fresh cherries up the beauty factor!

I have a set of free printables to share with you as soon as my book is out and the napkin rings and Slow Down garland down the middle are part of that!

After breakfast, we had fun picking cherries for a Father's Day pie!

Slowing Summer: Hot Chocolate and Hail

This might not sound very summery, but one late-May afternoon, the hail came fast and it cooled way off! My children thought it was so fun - they played in it like snow! And after they were thoroughly chilled, they wanted hot chocolate :)

We've also played in the sprinkler, dug in the mud and made cakes and pies and soups out of whatever nature goodies they can find. Lots of creative outdoor play!

Slowing Summer: Go to a Bookstore

I guess it shows we are from a small town, but one thing we love to do when we come to Colorado is go to Barnes and Noble and just browse! I always grab a stack of magazines to look at and head to the children's section where my littles have fun looking at books and playing.

Magazines are inspiring to me and I love the glossy pages and crisp photos plus great ideas. They are so expensive though so this is a great way to look at a bunch without spending a penny!
